Hippest Trip - The Soul Train Musical is a musical based on the classic television show Soul Train. Created and hosted by Don Cornelius, Soul Train began airing in 1971, bringing Black culture to television with singing, dancing, and music. Soul Train was one of the longest-running shows on television, running from 1971 until 2006. Soul Train featured many Black artists performing hip-hop, R&B, pop, disco, soul, funk, jazz, and even gospel.

Apollo Theater’s executive producer Kamilah Forbes is joined by choreographer Camille A. Brow, a Tony Award nominee, to bring the musical to life on stage. Alongside executive-producer Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson are producers Matthew Weaver, Jeffrey Tick, and Richard Gay, executive producers Tony Cornelius, Anthony E. Zuiker, Shawn Gee, Devin Keudell, and co-producers Nick Stern and J. Todd Harris.

Playwright Dominique Morisseau is a MacArthur Genius and has a Tony Award nomination for her book Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of the Temptations. The Broadway musical tells the story of The Temptations and their journey from the streets of Detroit to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Morisseau also wrote The Detroit Project.

What to Watch For

  • Hippest Trip - The Soul Train Musical has been in development since 2019. Originally predicted to hit Broadway in 2021, the musical was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Don Cornelius was a successful entrepreneur and radio DJ in Chicago. He hosted his show Soul Train from 1971 until 1993. He stepped down in order to make room for other actors and comedians to be able to reach the next generation of audiences.
  • The television series Soul Train gave many artists the chance to share their music and talents with the nation. Several artists’ careers were supported by the show’s success. Celebrities like Rosie Perez and Jody Watley launched their careers on Soul Train.
  • Don Cornelius died in 2012, and his son Tony Cornelius is an executive producer for Hippest Trip - The Soul Train Musical . Tony Cornelius has been a producer on several television shows, including Pacific Blue, American Soul, and of course, Soul Train.
