More information about Disney's The Lion King

The Lion King was destined for musical success immediately upon the movie's release in 1994, when it won the Academy Awards for Best Original Score (Hans Zimmer) and Best Original Song (John and Rice, "Circle of Life"). What to watch for

  • The puppets in The Lion King range from five-inch mini-animals to the 18-foot-tall giraffes, which performers operate on stilts.
  • A total of 232 puppets representing 25 animal species appear on stage in The Lion King. That's a full ecosystem!
  • Most of the show's dialogue and lyrics are in English, but they incorporate bits and pieces of six African languages: Swahili, Zulu, Xhosa, Sotho, Tswana, and Congolese.
  • Of these languages, Swahili is most prominent in the show. The opening lyrics of "Circle of Life" are in Swahili, and Simba and Mufasa's names are the Swahili words for "lion" and "king."
  • Director Julie Taymor was also the costume and puppet designer for The Lion King, so she's responsible for most of the onstage visuals. Naturally, she won Tony Awards for both direction and costume design (puppet design doesn't have its own category).
