What to Watch For:
Did you know The Mousetrap is the world’s longest run of any play in the world? It ran continuously on the West End from 1952 up until March 2020, only stopping for the global shutdown, and still resumes today.
St Martin’s Theatre in London, next door to the Ambassador Theatre, has been home to Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap since March 1974, upon arrival guests know which performance they are attending via a wooden sign upon entry. So far, more than 28,500 performances have been stage.
The Mousetrap was originally written as a gift in 1947 for Queen Mary’s 80th birthday in the form of a radio play entitled ‘Three Blind Mice’ - Agatha Christie then adapted the story for the stage and gifted the rights to her grandson Mathew Pritchard, on his ninth birthday!
Ironically, Christie didn’t anticipate the play to become the world’s longest running and asked that the story not be published for as long as the play continues on the West End. 70 years on, this means we still don’t have a film adaptation and one can’t be produced until the West End production has been closed for at least six months.
As a classic “Who Dunnit”, offering a mixture of 1950s drawing-room comedy and murder mystery, watch out for the twist ending - but be sure not to spoil it for anyone else once you leave the theatre!
