Based in Shakespeare's birthplace of Stratford-upon-Avon, the Royal Shakespeare Company was founded in 1879 as the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre. It got its current name in 1961. The company performs Shakespearean and contemporary plays in its two renovated venues, the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and the Swan Theatre, but also tours around the U.K. and the world.
