Fed up with his mundane life in 1950s Northern England, Sidney Stratton is down on his luck and realises that there’s a gap in the market for a fabric that is resilient to dirt or liquid. After many botched attempts, he discovers the perfect formula to create a synthetic material that never wears out. However, things start to get complicated when the factory management and trade unions realise the impact his actions could potentially have on them. When the factory owner’s daughter appears on the scene, he must figure out who he can trust
Following its world premiere at the Theatre Royal, Bath in September 2019, “The Man in the White Suit” transfers to the Wyndham’s Theatre this autumn. With original songs by Charlie Fink and an epic set design by Michael Taylor, this comedy like no other.
The play is adapted from the 1951 satirical comedy film by Ealing Studios starring Alec Guinness and Joan Greenwood.
Director Sean Foley and Stephen Mangan previously collaborated on the play, “Jeeves and Wooster in Perfect Nonsense” in 2013.
Charlie Fink, the lead singer of British indie rock band “Noah and the Whale”, also wrote the music featured in the 2015 Old Vic stage adaptation of “The Lorax,” as well as the 2016 film “A Street Cat Named Bob.”
Kara Tointon won the BBC television competition, “Strictly Come Dancing” in 2010 and her dancing skills are put on full display in a sequence in “The Man in the White Suit.”
