Discover what lies beneath Shakespeare’s deadly revenge tragedy at candlelight.
Jude Christian adapts and directs the violent play at Sam Wanamaker Playhouse. She’s previously experimented with Shakespeare stories, notably mashing up Othello and Macbeth into one story at Lyric Hammersmith. Her blazing debut will see an all-female cast take on the bloody play, led by Katy Stephens as the Roman ruler.
Set after a 10-year battle, the Titus Andronicus play sees the Roman embark on an extended era of killing. He’s faced with a difficult decision when Tamora, the Queen of the Goths, begs for mercy. Eventually, Titus agrees to spare their lives, but this doesn’t stop Titus, and indeed Tamora, seeking revenge on one another. Who will win the bloodiest battle of them all?
Let the battle commence.

Titus Andronicus is one of ten tragedies by William Shakespeare. Even though it's one of Shakespeare’s early works, it’s considered to be one of the most brutal. In fact, when it’s previously performed at Shakespeare’s Globe, audience members are said to have fainted during the show! In this production, instead of pools of blood on stage, Titus Andronicus in London will see actors blow out candles to indicate deaths.
