In The Old Man and the Pool, as Birbiglia steps into the doctor's office, he receives a dose of intimidating news. First, it turns out his family has quite a heart problem history. Second, to dodge the hereditary bullet, he has to take two actions: eat healthier and exercise. But he isn’t thrilled about either option. The thought of clean eating sends boredom waves through his taste buds, and the mere mention of exercise, particularly swimming, unleashes a tidal wave of childhood pool trauma from a particular Massachusetts misadventure. He's stuck with nothing but deep thoughts about his own impending doom and hilarious findings about mortality.
This isn’t the first time the actor, storyteller, comedian Birbiglia has stepped onto a London stage for a one-man masterpiece. His award-winning show My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend’ ran at the Soho House for two weeks in 2012, marking his first performance in the capital. Now, he returns for a limited run at the Wyndham Theatre — so it’s definitely not one to miss!
