In Fiddler on the Roof in London be transported to 1905 Imperial Russia, to the small village of Anatevka. The story follows a Jewish father, Tevye, and his five daughters. Tevye clings to religious and cultural traditions while his daughters challenge his beliefs surrounding love and marriage.

The music is by Jerry Block, the lyrics are by Sheldon Harnick, and the show is filled with audience favourite songs like If I Were A Rich Man, and Sunrise, Sunset. Since the musical's premiere in 1964, solo artists have also recorded many of the songs in Fiddler on the Roof, including Gwen Stefani and Eve, who covered If I Were a Rich Man as Rich Girl for the 2004 album, Love. Angel. Music. Baby.

Directions from tube: (10 mins) Baker Street is the nearest tube station to the Open Air Theatre. Exit Baker Street on to Marylebone Road and turn left. Proceed past Madame Tussauds along Marylebone Road and turn left into York Gate. Continue straight up York Gate and over York Bridge, leading to the Inner Circle. Pass through the large gates into the park and walk straight until you see the theatre on your left. Entry to the Open Air Theatre is via the Box Office in Queen Mary’s Gardens within Regent’s Park.

Fiddler on the Roof is a musical with an excellent creative team, including director Jordan Fein (Oklahoma!), Olivier-winning sound designer Nick Lidster (Cabaret), choreographer Julia Cheng (Cabaret), Tony-winning designer Tom Scutt (Cabaret) and lighting designer Aideen Malone (Charlie & Stan).

The show, written by Joseph Stein, is based on Tevye and his Daughters (or Tevye the Dairyman), a collection of stories written in Yiddish by Sholem Aleichem between 1894 and 1914. The stories, which are based on Alceichem’s life, tell the story of a Jewish town at the turn of the 20th century.

The musical has also inspired various other creative works, including the 1971 film, Fiddler on the Roof, which was such a success that it was the highest-grossing movie in 1971 and earned three Academy Awards and two Golden Globe Awards.

  • The musical has left such a mark in theatre that a documentary, Fiddler: A Miracle of Miracles, about the show and its legacy, was released in 2019.
  • Fiddler on the Roof's original Broadway run was record-breaking, it was the first musical in history to play more than 3,000 performances.
