More information about Oedipus

Oedipus is a play that was staged at Internationaal Theatre Amsterdam and the Edinburgh Festival where it was a success with audiences and critics alike.

A 5-star review from The Guardian said of the show, "The narrative exercises a thriller-like grip, the countdown clock marking time, not only until the election results, but before the secrets of the past explode into the present."

Oedipus in London has an amazing creative team headed by director Robert Icke (1984, The Doctor), who also wrote this adaptation. Also included in the creative team is costume designer Wojciech Dziedzic (The Crucible), Olivier Award-winning scenic designer Hildegard Bechtler (After the Dance), video designer Tal Yarden (Ali (The Musical)), Tony and Olivier Award-nominated lighting designer Natasha Chivers (Prima Facie), and Olivier Award-winning sound designer Tom Gibbons (People, Places & Things).

What to watch for

  • Robert Icke is known for his modern adaptations of classics, including his 2015 adaptation of Oresteia.
  • While the show progresses and tensions mount, the campaign office is slowly taken apart around the characters, a physical depiction of the tragedy of the tale.
  • The original play by Sophocles premiered in 429 BC, and even today, themes explored within the tale are relevant.
  • This play is not the first adaptation of Oedipus. Throughout history, there have been numerous stage, radio, and film adaptations, including the 2017 BBC 3 radio adaptation starring Christopher Eccleston and Fiona Shaw.
