The Blue Man Group show is a family-friendly feast for the senses. The blue men have been Grammy-nominated for their music, but the stage show, with colorful visuals, adds a whole other level to the experience. Three blue men perform the show and have delighted audiences at the Astor Place Theatre for more than 25 years. From playing PVC pipe instruments to painting by chewing on a pod of pigment and then spewing color on a canvas, their ingenious combination of music, theatre, performance, and visual art is unparalleled.
There's no dialogue, but you'll still be captivated as you see theatre, music, and visual art combine in a totally unique way. If you're looking for a change from traditional theatre and want a time-honored, award-winning fun time, see Blue Man Group; the show won an Obie Award, a Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatrical Experience, and a Lucille Lortel Special Award.
The Blue Men are beings from another planet who are learning how Earth works through experimentation. To you, a pipe is a tool, but to them, it might look more like a drum. You get to see their experiments in real time, and you might look at everyday objects in a whole new way after experiencing their artistic possibilities through the Blue Men's eyes. This show celebrates limitless creativity and the unmatched joy of making art.

Three friends, Chris Wink, Matt Goldman, and Phil Stanton, founded Blue Man Group in 1987, and at all shows since, all "blue men" appear on stage in groups of three. The original trio first adopted the "blue man" persona for a street procession, which led to them doing small performances at clubs in downtown Manhattan and, finally, a fully produced performance at the Astor Place Theatre in 1991. That theatre has been the home of Blue Man Group in New York ever since.
Blue Man Group has expanded far beyond New York in the decades since, though. Blue Man Group also has shows in residence in Boston, Chicago, Las Vegas, and Berlin, Germany, and has two tours running. The show has played in 10 total countries on 4 continents, at the Grammy and Emmy Awards, and on multiple TV shows with its members as guests. Blue Man Group has released a book and multiple albums, the first of which, 1999's Audio, got a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Instrumental Album.
Every Blue Man Group performance lights up all the senses and invigorates the mind, and you might even find yourself on stage or interacting with the action from your seat. Just don’t try to talk to a blue man; the devious, mime-like character might just have a trick or two up his sleeve.
This long-running hybrid of theatre, music, science, and art is unlike anything else on stage. Go on an exploratory journey with three extraterrestrial Blue Men figuring out how Earth works — the creative uses they find for everyday objects might surprise you.
