First presented by Company XIV in 2019, Queen of Hearts is a thrilling reimagining of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. You don't need to know that story’s plot to enjoy this show, which takes some creative liberties to appeal to a broad audience.
A highly experiential event, Queen of Hearts is a show from the second you enter the theatre. Smells of incense, flashes of color, and scantily-clad cast members holding drinks charm audiences and invite you to explore your more curious side. Hang out near the bar or take a plush seat: Between aerial feats and acrobatic tricks, the cast will be popping the champagne for you at your seat.
The theatre’s character evokes that of its neighborhood: In graffiti-heavy Bushwick, dive bars and a bustling art scene mix as abandoned warehouses are converted into creative loft spaces. On stage and off, there’s plenty to see and explore.
What to watch for
- New York-based performer LEXXE, a Company XIV veteran, leads the cast as Alice. “LEXXE, who has written several fabulous original songs and plays Alice, is such a talented songwriter and performer,” director/creator/choreographer Austin McCormack said. “Her classical background and musical sensibilities make her the perfect collaborator for this production.”
- Company XIV is known for its playful (and naughty) takes on cherished classics. Founded in 2006, the company produces spectacular burlesque performances, including the Christmas spectacular Nutcracker Rouge and the beverage-forward Cocktail Magique. High- and lowbrow entertainment mix with lavish design to deliver decadent extravaganzas inspired by the court of Louis XIV.
- Company XIV doesn’t attract the usual theatre crowd, and that’s a good thing. When people think of New York theatre, they may first consider Broadway. Théâtre XIV is located across the East River in Brooklyn, and so it offers something a little more daring. As such, expect a more bohemian audience and a show perfect for curious thrill-seekers.
