Tina - The Tina Turner Musical is a musical like you've never seen before. Spanning the high-highs and low-lows of a life lived in front of an audience, Tina is as much a musical as a rock concert celebration of its source material. The role of Tina Turner on stage was originated by Adrienne Warren, who transformed herself from triple threat talent to Tony Award-winning star in the role. Now, Nkeki Obi-Melewe, who played Tina in London's West End, steps into Tina Turner's dancing shoes in Tina - The Tina Turner Musical in New York.

What to Watch For

  • Although book writer Katori Hall has an Olivier for her play The Mountaintop, Tina marks Hall's first foray into libretto. Katori Hall made history as the first Black woman to win the Best New Play award.
  • Rest assured, the Tina musical has Tina Turner's stamp of approval. That is to say, the eponymous diva has been on hand for the musical’s creative evolution, and has given the go-ahead for each character’s depiction and even their moves. In fact, Turner herself taught her original onstage counterpart, Adrienne Warren, how to do her signature move, the Pony.
  • Audiences should also know they’re in ever-competent jukebox hands with director Phyllida Lloyd. The English talent is best known for directing one of the most universally beloved jukebox shows of all time, Mamma Mia! But this director has range; her other best-known work was on the Meryl Streep-starring film The Iron Lady.
  • While it would be nearly impossible to include the entire Tina Turner songbook in a single musical (that would be one long musical), don’t expect any skimping on the music side. There are 21 songs in the Tina Turner musical — and yes, they’re the ones you want to hear, like "Proud Mary," and maybe even a few you weren’t expecting. Just like Turner herself, this musical is full of surprises.
