More information about Kimberly Akimbo on Broadway

Kimberly Akimbo is the most Tony Award-winning show of the season, with five prizes including Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Original Score! Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire adapts his critically acclaimed play Kimberly Akimbo into a moving new musical with Tony-nominated music by Tony Award-winning composer Jeanine Tesori. Get Kimberly Akimbo tickets on TodayTix.

The hilarious and heartwarming Kimberly Akimbo musical premiered at Atlantic Theater Company in 2021, receiving rave reviews and earning every Off-Broadway Best Musical prize: the New York Drama Critics’ Circle, Lucille Lortel, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle Awards. Atlantic Theatre Company is also known for hosting the world premiere of The Band’s Visit, which moved to Broadway and won the Tony Award for Best Musical.

In Kimberly Akimbo, Kimberly is an average New Jersey teenager stuck in the body of an elderly woman. She suffers from a rare genetic condition, which causes her to age four and a half times faster than the average person. But this affliction may be the least of her problems, as she navigates her first crush, a dysfunctional family, and a harebrained scheme that could land her in jail! Despite it all, Kimberly is determined to make her life an uplifting, great adventure.

David Lindsay-Abaire’s original Kimberly Akimbo play premiered in California and then New York in 2001, both times to rave reviews. Twenty years later, Lindsay-Abaire has returned to Kimberly’s amazing story, this time adapting his play into the book for a unique and heartfelt new musical.

He’s joined on the creative team by composer/lyricist Jeanine Tesori, who won the Tony Award for Best Original Score for Fun Home and is a nominee for Kimberly Akimbo. Tesori’s other beloved works include Violet, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Caroline, or Change, and Shrek: The Musical, which she also wrote with Lindsay-Abaire.

Kimberly Akimbo stars 2023 Tony Award winner Victoria Clark, who has appeared on Broadway in The Light in the Piazza, Sister Act, Gigi, Cinderella, and more beloved shows. She's joined by 2023 Tony winner Bonnie Milligan as the hilarious, conniving Aunt Debra.

What to watch for

  • One of the show's characters is obsessed with anagrams and tells Kimberly her full name, Kimberly Levaco, is an anagram for "cleverly akimbo." That's where the show's title comes from!
  • Tesori is joined on the creative team by choreographer Danny Mefford. The two previously worked together on Fun Home, which Mefford also choreographed in its original production.
  • Director Jessica Stone was previously a musical theatre performer herself, having appeared in the last Broadway revival of Anything Goes among many other credits.
  • In both Lindsay-Abaire’s original play and this Kimberly Akimbo musical adaptation, Kimberly is played by an older female actress, though the character is in fact only a teenager.
  • The entire Off-Broadway cast of the Kimberly Akimbo musical returned for the Broadway production.
