About & Juliet

What happens when you cross classical theatre characters with modern pop music and a concept from the mind of a sitcom writer? You get & Juliet on Broadway, the nine-time Tony-nominated Best Musical nominee from London that gives Juliet, of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, a new, empowering story. Get & Juliet tickets on TodayTix.

Come for the hits, stay for the humor and heart. & Juliet boasts the song catalog of five-time Grammy-winning Swedish songwriter and music producer Max Martin, who's written or co-written 22 Billboard number 1 hits for pop stars like Katy Perry, Britney Spears, the Backstreet Boys, and Kelly Clarkson. Expect to hear all these at & Juliet in New York, together with an original story by David West Read, a writer on the Emmy-winning comedy series Schitt's Creek.

He's written Juliet a coming-of-age tale that doesn't end when Romeo's story does, but takes her — and the audience — on a whirlwind adventure beyond the walls of Verona. Anyone of any age who's had a dream, fallen in love, or had to figure out (or is figuring out) who they want to be will see themselves in & Juliet on Broadway.

In the & Juliet musical, Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway, decides she doesn’t like the ending her husband is writing for Romeo & Juliet, and instead proposes her own. Coming up with the story as she goes along, Hathaway spins an entirely original tale of a Juliet who decides not to kill herself after losing Romeo. Instead, she escapes Verona (against her parents’ wishes) and gathers her friends for a journey of self-discovery to Paris.

& Juliet brings together real-life figures (Shakespeare and Anne), familiar faces from Romeo & Juliet (like the Capulets and the Nurse), and new characters (like Juliet’s friends May, April, and Francois). Together, they bring to life a classic tale for the modern day, with a fresh reimagining of Juliet’s life independent of Romeo.

We’re confident you’ll have a blast at this fun, feel-good musical people are calling this year’s Mamma Mia! Once you’ve seen & Juliet on Broadway, you’ll want to see it, baby, one more time (or more).

Plus, TodayTix offers the chance to get & Juliet rush tickets each morning for that day's performance! Please note there is no & Juliet Broadway lottery.

More information about & Juliet

& Juliet already has a proven record of success across the pond. The musical had a hit-making 2019 world premiere in London, where it’s still running. The show received nine Olivier Award nominations, including Best New Musical, and a record-breaking 13 nominations at the WhatsOnStage Awards there. The show also made a star of its Juliet, Miriam-Teak Lee, who won an Olivier Award and a WhatsOnStage Award for her performance.

& Juliet's North American premiere was in Toronto, Canada in summer 2022, with a new cast. Only one London cast member — Melanie La Barre as the Nurse — traveled across the pond with the musical, and she and the entire Toronto cast are also in & Juliet on Broadway.

& Juliet is a pop musical for multiple generations. A total of 30 Max Martin songs are in the show, from the ‘90s through today. From Backstreet Boys, Bon Jovi, and early Britney Spears hits; to early-2000s bops from Katy Perry, Kesha, and P!nk; to 2010s chart-toppers from Ariana Grande and The Weeknd, there are songs everyone has on repeat on their Spotify playlists.

What to watch for

  • One of the songs in & Juliet, "One More Try," is a new song Martin and Jessie J wrote specifically for the show.
  • Proper Elizabethan meets pop extravaganza in the details of & Juliet on Broadway. Elements like the costumes are inspired by Shakespeare’s era, but the choreography emulates the moves you’d see in your favorite pop stars’ music videos.
  • With David West Read attached to & Juliet, this marks the second Broadway season in a row featuring a Schitt’s Creek alum, after cast member Noah Reid’s star turn in The Minutes in spring 2022.
  • In addition to his five Grammys, Martin has won the ASCAP Songwriter of the Year Award 11 times (including every year from 2011-2018), and he's an Oscar and two-time Golden Globe nominee.
  • & Juliet is perfect for fans of Tony-winning shows like Moulin Rouge! The Musical, which also works pop music into an original, larger-than-life story, and Six, a pop-infused, feminist remix of English history.
