Gianandrea Noseda, conductor
Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No. 8
George Walker: Sinfonia No. 5, “Visions”
Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No. 7
The NSO presents the compact, complex final sinfonia by George Walker (1922–2018), a Washington, D.C. native and the first Black composer to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music. Bold and uncompromising, Sinfonia No. 5, “Visions” crowns a long career in which Dr. Walker produced more than 90 groundbreaking works. Gianandrea Noseda bookends the program with two glorious Beethoven symphonies: the buoyant, humorous Eighth and the relentlessly rhythmic Seventh.
Part of Beethoven & American Masters:
George Walker & William Grant Still
Ludwig van Beethoven’s music was groundbreaking, original, and provocative. To preserve his legacy of challenging musical norms, Music Director Gianandrea Noseda continues the NSO’s acclaimed Beethoven and American Masters festival with four glorious programs of Beethoven symphonies paired with works by trailblazing American composers George Walker and William Grant Still. Take your “forever preserved” seat in the Concert Hall as these concerts will be recorded live for release on the NSO’s new record label!
