More information about Moulin Rouge! The Musical

Moulin Rouge! The Musical is based on the Academy Award-winning 2001 Baz Luhrmann film, starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor. While the original film changed the future possibilities of movie musicals, Moulin Rouge! The Musical is the gold standard of jukebox musicals. That’s down to Alex Timbers directing the glossy musical by bringing the history through while letting Sonya Tayeh’s choreography and Justin Levine’s music supervision do the talking.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical played a 2-week engagement at Boston’s Colonial Theatre before taking over Broadway by storm and winning 10 Tony Awards. The whole world’s fallen for Christian and Satine’s love story, with productions on Broadway, in Australia, and in London. How wonderful life is with this show in the world.

What to Watch For:

  • There’s over 70 pop songs used throughout Moulin Rouge! The Musical. As well as popular songs from the movie like “Come What May,” there are also tracks by Adele, Sia, and Beyoncé.
  • The real Moulin Rouge nightclub in Paris opened in 1889. ‘Moulin Rouge’ directly translates to “red windmill,” and you’ll see a red windmill inside the Piccadilly Theatre.
  • Although all the Moulin Rouge! The Musical characters are fictional, they’re based on real people. Harold Zidler’s name is inspired by the club's co-founder, Charles Zidler.
