New York Theatre Workshop was founded in 1979 by Stephen Graham. Its theatre is located on East 4th Street in the East Village, where NYTW has held its performances since 1992. Though the company does produce some newly reimagined revivals of existing works, it is best known as a producer of new shows. Tony-winning Broadway shows like Rent and Hadestown are among the productions that originated at NYTW before going on to multi-award-winning runs and international success for its creators and performers.
In 2022, NYTW's former artistic director, James C. Nicola, won a Special Tony Award for fostering new creators and their work at NYTW for nearly 35 years. New York Theatre Workshop showcases new plays and musicals every year in its 200-seat performance space, making the experience of every show intimate. Plus, venturing out of the Theatre District to attend a New York Theatre Workshop show means you'll get to explore a new neighborhood while experiencing a new show. And you never know — you might be one of the first people to see the next smash hit in the making.
